1980 ൽ തമിഴ്നാട് കേഡറിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേറ്റീവ് സർവീസിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം, വ്യവസായ വകുപ്പ് പ്രിൻസിപ്പൽ സെക്രട്ടറി, വാണിജ്യ നികുതി കമ്മീഷണർ തുടങ്ങിയ പദവികളും വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പിന്നീട് കേന്ദ്ര ധനകാര്യ വകുപ്പിൽ ജോയിന്റ് സെക്രട്ടറിയായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
